Beyond the Couple Portrait: The Little Details That Tell Your Indian Wedding Story
Updated: Oct 10
You may remember choosing your wedding saree long before you remember the final seating arrangement. A pair of bangles might have been a gift. Your invitation could carry words your families chose together.
These details deserve a place in your wedding photographs alongside the ceremony and celebrations. Here is how to prepare them without adding another complicated task to your wedding morning.
What is a wedding flat lay?
A flat lay is a photograph taken from above, showing a small arrangement of objects. For a wedding, it can bring together an invitation, accessories and other personal keepsakes. Choose details that mean something to you rather than buying extra items just for the photograph.
Let your invitation introduce the celebration
Keep one clean, spare copy of your printed invitation with its envelope. If you have separate cards for different functions, decide which ones you would like photographed.
For a bilingual invitation, tell your photographer whether both versions should appear. Check that names and important wording are visible in the arrangement. If your invitation is digital, there is no need to print an entire stationery set simply to imitate another wedding.
Photograph the outfit before it is needed
A close-up of a saree border, embroidery or a carefully chosen blouse can record details that are less noticeable in a wider portrait.
Ask whether these photographs can be taken before dressing begins. Keep the outfit on a clean surface and let the person helping you dress handle any folding or rearranging. There is no need to undo pleats or delay preparations for a styled picture.
The same approach works for a veshti, sherwani, suit or another outfit: identify the details you want remembered and make them accessible beforehand.
Give ceremonial items the respect they deserve
If you would like a thaali or another ceremonial item photographed, check with your family or officiant first. Explain who holds it, when it will be available and whether it may be moved.
Some objects are best photographed where they are already placed for the ceremony. A beautiful photograph does not require taking them away from their intended setting.
Include the groom’s choices too
Detail photographs need not focus only on bridal accessories. A watch selected for the occasion, a meaningful gift or a carefully chosen piece of clothing can help tell the groom’s side of the story.
Ask each partner to choose one or two details they care about. This gives the photographer a clearer brief than a long list copied from someone else’s wedding.
Keep jewellery handovers simple
Choose one trusted person to coordinate access to jewellery. Keep pieces in their labelled boxes until required, and agree who will collect them after the photographs.
If an item is borrowed, let the photographer know about any handling restrictions. You can also ask for a photograph while it is being worn instead of placing it in an arrangement.
Decide what may be shared publicly
An invitation may display family names, addresses or telephone numbers. A handwritten note may contain something you want to keep between yourselves.
Tell your photographer which detail photographs may be shared online and which should remain private. You can request a composition that leaves personal information out of the frame.
